In Peru, three out of ten women are indigenous and represent 14.5% of the national population, according to the latest National Household Survey. However, their low participation in decision-making in their communities affects their economic and political autonomy, La República reported.
The exclusion indicates that many women are prevented from owning plots within the communal territory, despite the fact that they are the ones who develop agriculture as their main economic activity.
A study by the National Organization of Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Women of Peru (ONAMIAP), very few women manage to obtain a position within the community directive. In case they access them, they are almost always minor positions.
